Filming Italy Sardegna, interview with director Tiziana Rocca

Filming Italy Sardegna take place in Italy with international guests and screening.

The eighth edition of Filming Italy Sardegna began at Forte Village in Cagliari – Italy – until June 28, 2025. “The Festival reaches its eighth edition this year. It’s an important milestone,” states founder Tiziana Rocca, “confirming our commitment to promoting Italian and international cinema, supporting young talents, and creating an increasingly vibrant dialogue between culture, industry, and audiences.”

How would you describe your creation, Filming Italy Sardinia?

I would describe it as informal because the master classes allow viewers to interact with cinema stars, including actors, actresses, and directors.

With Filming Italy Sardinia, now in its eighth edition, we have always sought to support cinema in theaters during the summer, thanks to initiatives like the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Cinecittà, Anec, and Cinema Revolution. As a result, Filming Italy Sardinia has become a benchmark for promoting audiovisual products and has involved many young people, bringing them closer to the world of cinema and giving the festival international visibility.

I also organize Filming Italy Los Angeles, which celebrated its tenth edition this year. Over the years, it has created a bridge between Italy and the United States for many authors, directors, and actors.

Can you give us a preview of the program?

Numerous films will be screened in preview, including more than 70 titles during the event: Steven Soderbergh’s horror film Presence, starring Lucy Liu and Chris Sullivan; the critically acclaimed spy story Reflection in a Dead Diamond, directed by Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani and starring Fabio Testi, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival; and the American martial arts film Karate Kid: Legends, directed by Jonathan Entwistle. The festival’s opening film is Poveri Noi, directed by Fabrizio Maria Cortese and starring Paolo Ruffini.

There will also be space for TV series.

There will be a lot of it because TV series are now an essential part of the audiovisual landscape. This year, the Filming Italy Excellence Award will be presented to Simon Baker, an actor with innate charm and unmistakable talent. He is the star of the television series The Mentalist and The Guardian, as well as the cult film The Devil Wears Prada. Also receiving the award are the iconic film and television star Fran Drescher, and the award-winning star of cult series such as The Valley of Eden and The Lady of the West. Also in attendance will be film and television actress Melissa Roxburgh; Joe Manganiello, an actor and director known for the television series True Blood, as well as the blockbuster films Magic Mike and Magic Mike XXL; and Karen Pittman, a US actress nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for The Morning Show. Also attending are Tati Gabrielle, star of The 100 and The Last of Us; Scott Eastwood; Missi Pyle, star of hit comedies and television series; Claire Sliney, director and producer; and British actress and model, known for her roles in Game of Thrones and the Fast & Furious saga.

When did you choose this job?

I started organizing events when I was nineteen. Thirteen years ago, I was the artistic director of the Taormina Film Festival, and this year, I resumed that role. I am the first European woman to hold such a prestigious position, directing one of the world’s most famous film events. Perhaps the job chose me.

Can you tell us about your upcoming projects?

I am developing Filming Italy Sardinia and Los Angeles, as well as the Filming Italy Venice Award and Taormina. I am also producing Judas’ Gospel, a film about the apostle Judas. Filming has already been completed, and the film has already been sold in some markets.
